Making Tax Digital FAQs
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's programme to move UK tax reporting online. VAT-registered businesses already file VAT returns through MTD-compatible software. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment is rolling out for self-employed people and landlords in phases. Instead of paper or ad-hoc digital records, you keep digital records and send updates to HMRC through approved software — like fixdd.
Do I need to use MTD?
If you're VAT-registered, you must follow MTD for VAT rules (with limited exceptions). For Income Tax, MTD ITSA applies when you're in scope by turnover and business type — thresholds and dates change, so it's worth checking. Our free HMRC check walks you through a short quiz so you can see what applies to your situation.
Which taxes does MTD cover in fixdd?
fixdd focuses on what matters for UK trades and small businesses: MTD VAT returns and MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment. You connect to HMRC once, then file and track what you need from the same app you use for invoicing and expenses.
How do I connect fixdd to HMRC?
You sign in to fixdd, start the HMRC connection flow, and authorise fixdd using HMRC's secure process (you may need your Government Gateway details). After that, we can submit eligible returns and show your status in the app. If anything's missing, we'll tell you before you file.
Is the HMRC check really free?
Yes. You can sign up for a free fixdd account, connect to HMRC at no charge for the eligibility check, and complete our short quiz — no credit card required. It's designed so you know where you stand before you commit to anything else.
